Hidden deep within the Scottish Highlands lies the remains of a forgotten settlement, swallowed by woodland and almost completely lost to time. The story of this place is said to begin in the 1800s, when the surrounding land belonged to a wealthy and influential Scottish family. Deep within their estate stood a grand mansion, but after a devastating fire the house was abandoned, leaving its ruins to slowly disappear beneath the forest. Decades later, around the late 1800s and early 1900s, Danish settlers are believed to have travelled into these woods and established a small, isolated community around the old estate. Homes were built between the trees, along with workshops and a tiny chapel that still remains today. For years, the settlement existed almost completely cut off from the outside world. Stories suggest that some people living nearby barely even knew the community was there. As the decades passed, families slowly moved away and the village began to fall silent. Buildings were abandoned, nature took over, and by the late 1980s the last residents were said to have left. At the end of the old lane also stands another abandoned house, once belonging to the local farmer’s parents. Local stories even claim that some people believed his mother practised witchcraft. Today, the old road, ruined homes, chapel and remains of the settlement still sit hidden amongst the trees. In this documentary, we head deep into the forest to discover what remains of this forgotten village and uncover the stories that have surrounded it for generations. Some details surrounding the settlement have been passed down through local stories and legend and cannot all be independently verified.
