On Thursday morning, September 3, a magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck the Alaska-Aleutian megathrust off Umnak Island, roughly 84 miles south-southwest of Nikolski in the Fox Islands — first reported at 6.2 and later revised up to 6.3, with its depth recalculated from about 9 kilometers to 35. The National Tsunami Warning Center cleared the entire Pacific within fifteen minutes, and the quake harmed no one. But it struck the same 2,500-mile fault system that holds the Semidi segment — the one stretch of subduction zone whose geometry aims a tsunami straight at southern California. The question now isn't the magnitude. It's whether the coast's five-hour warning window — and the remote sensor network that makes it possible — would hold if the fault ever fired for real.
Breakpoint covers the moments when the Earth shifts — earthquakes, eruptions, severe weather, climate events, and the science behind the planet's biggest stories. Every video delivers the headlines, the data, and what comes next in twenty to twenty-five minutes.
New videos three to four times a week.
