Smith Corona Super Sterling Tutorial — The Workhorse Portable of the 1960s–70s
Description:
The Smith Corona Super Sterling is one of the most reliable and accessible vintage portables you can find — a true workhorse that was built for everyday use and still delivers decades later. Produced from the early 1960s into the 1970s at Smith Corona's factory in Cortland, New York, the Super Sterling offered a solid, no-nonsense typing experience at a price point that put a quality machine in homes, dorms, and offices across America. In this tutorial, I walk you through everything you need to know to set up, type on, and care for your Super Sterling.
The Super Sterling sits in the middle of Smith Corona's portable lineup from this era — more capable than the Corsair or Skyriter, and sharing much of the mechanical DNA with the higher-end Galaxie series. It features a full-size keyboard, a responsive touch, a durable all-metal frame under that distinctive two-tone housing, and the kind of straightforward American engineering that just works.
In this video, I cover:
⌨️ Typing technique — the Super Sterling has a firm, confident keystroke with moderate resistance, and I'll show you how to get the cleanest impressions and find your rhythm on this machine
📄 Loading paper & setup — paper threading, margin setting, and getting familiar with the carriage
🎚️ Controls walkthrough — margin set/release, tab set/clear, line spacing selector, touch regulator, ribbon color selector, backspace, and the carriage release levers
🔄 Ribbon replacement — the Super Sterling uses standard universal spools and I'll walk you through the swap step by step
🛠️ Maintenance essentials — cleaning type slugs, segment care, carriage rail lubrication, platen and feed roller conditioning
⚙️ Common issues — sticky or sluggish keys, uneven type impressions, carriage not advancing smoothly, ribbon not reversing, tab stops not holding
🆚 Where it fits in the Smith Corona lineup — Super Sterling vs. Galaxie vs. Corsair and what to expect from each
💡 Buying tips — what to inspect before purchasing, including common trouble spots like cracked housing clips, worn feed rollers, and loose carriage assemblies
The Super Sterling doesn't get the glamour of a Hermes or the cult following of an Olympia SM series, but ask any typewriter tech and they'll tell you — these machines are tanks. They take a beating, they're easy to maintain, and they type beautifully once properly cleaned and adjusted. If you want a vintage typewriter you can actually use every day without babying it, this is the one.
