SYND 20 9 77 GREEK PREMIER, CONSTANTINE KARAMANLIS, HAS CALLED FOR GENERAL ELECTIONS IN GREECE

(19 Sep 1977) With more than a year remaining of his term of office, on Monday (19 Sept 77), Greek Premier, Constantine Karamanlis, called for general elections on 20 November. Karamanlis is seeking a mandate from the Greek voters, in order to settle long-standing disputes with Turkey, and to bring Greece into the common market (EEC). The government issued the election announcement after Karamanlis held separate talks with opposition leaders Andreas Papandreou of the Socialist Party, and George Mavros Of The Democratic Centre Union.
