On Monday, 19 October 2026, US War Secretary Pete Hegseth met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during an unannounced visit to Israel, Axios reported citing two sources, amid discussions about potentially resuming major combat operations against Iran. The Pentagon declined to comment. The visit came eight days before Israel's 27 October election, and a day after Donald Trump endorsed Netanyahu in a letter warning that if Israel elects "anyone other than Bibi, America will have to do this work ourselves, and I am not inclined to do so" (Fox News). Vice President JD Vance declined to join the endorsement (Al Jazeera). On 13 October, Axios reported that Hegseth and the leadership of US Central Command are the strongest backers of resuming large-scale strikes, while most of Trump's advisers prefer sanctions and pressure. On 8 October, Israel's Channel 12 reported that US officers told IDF chief Eyal Zamir to prepare for a massive attack on Iran within three weeks (Times of Israel). Yet at a rally in Kansas on the same Monday as Hegseth's visit, Trump said: "We could leave right now" (Arab Times). Iran's answer: Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi wrote "Be our guest. But be careful; we have unfinished jobs too", Iran's UN envoy asked for an emergency Security Council meeting over threats to use the GBU-43/B "Mother of All Bombs" (Iran International), and early on Tuesday the IRGC said it shot down a US MQ-9 Reaper over the Strait of Hormuz, which it called the 54th (Middle East Eye). Iran's navy also claims US forces fired two light projectiles at the Konarak naval base; a US official denied it (Dawn). The commander of the USS George Washington says Iran has tried to strike "a variety of ships" near Hormuz (Gulf News). #Iran #Hegseth #Netanyahu #Trump #EtaiReality
