You open your eyes. It's hot, the air smells of mud and rotting leaves, and something enormous is breathing behind the trees. You have just been sent 66 million years into the past, to Hell Creek, in the last spring of the dinosaurs. No phone. No weapon. No food. No way home. How long would you survive? This is a hypothetical scenario, but every danger in it is based on real science: real fossils, real animals and real studies. ⏱️ CHAPTERS 0:00 Wake Up 1:02 Hour 1: A Different Planet 1:57 Hour 6: Water 2:50 Day 1: Food 3:47 Night 1: The Small Hunters 4:49 Day 3: Tyrannosaurus 5:58 Day 5: Giants Everywhere 6:55 The Sky Falls 7:54 The Verdict 📜 NOTES & SOURCES • Setting: Hell Creek Formation (Montana and the Dakotas), end of the Late Cretaceous, about 66 million years ago. • Day length: about 23.5 hours, from daily growth layers in a ~70-million-year-old rudist shell (de Winter et al., 2020, Paleoceanography and Paleoclimatology). • Atmosphere: Late Cretaceous oxygen and CO₂ levels are still debated; estimates vary by method. • Grasses existed but were rare; no grasslands yet. Ferns, conifers, cycads, palms and early flowering plants. • Velociraptor was turkey-sized, feathered and lived in Asia (~75–71 million years ago). Hell Creek raptors include Acheroraptor and Dakotaraptor (~5 m). • T. rex: ~12 m long, ~8 t. Bite force estimated at 35,000–57,000 N (Bates & Falkingham, 2012, Biology Letters). Top speed is still debated; published estimates range from about 18 to 40 km/h. • Triceratops is one of the most common dinosaurs in Hell Creek. Quetzalcoatlus (wingspan ~10 m) is known from Texas. • The Chicxulub impactor was about 10 km wide. The Tanis site (North Dakota) preserves fish with impact spherules in their gills, and studies of those fish suggest the impact happened in spring (During et al., 2022, Nature). • About three quarters of species on Earth went extinct at the end of the Cretaceous. • Survival odds on screen are illustrative, not a scientific calculation. Dinosaur sounds are designed effects; nobody knows exactly what dinosaurs sounded like. • Visuals are original stylized illustrations; maps are schematic. How many days do you think you would last?
