Where Do 5.5 Million Chinese Actually Live in America?

Where do Chinese Americans live—and how did these communities become part of America’s story? In this episode of Diaspora Compass, we explore ten U.S. metropolitan areas with large Chinese communities, from Houston and Chicago to San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York. Discover historic Chinatowns, suburban neighborhoods, immigrant businesses, cultural landmarks, and Lunar New Year celebrations. Along the way, we trace stories of migration, work, and community building—and see how Chinese American life extends far beyond Chinatown. The population figures presented in this video refer to metropolitan areas, not city limits, and use the ACS 2020–2024 category “Chinese except Taiwanese, alone or in combination.” Which community should Diaspora Compass explore next?
