Dr. Julia Cui, Professor and Department Head of the Environmental and Molecular Toxicology at Oregon State University. In this study, Dr. Cui collaborated with several U.S. institutions, including Oregon State University, Univ. of Washington, Arizona State University, Univ. of New Mexico, Florida International University, and Univ. of Georgia. Using APOE3 and APOE4 model, Dr. Cui and her team performed short-term exposures to an early-life term mouse model to mixed ocean nanoplastics. The goal of this study was to identify which early biomarkers could indicate delayed onset of late-life neurotoxicity. Results differences in APOE3 and APOE4 carriers, including lipid associations involving taxa linked to gut barrier integrity, oxidative stress, and intestinal homeostasis, and other metabolic disruptions.
