Kya Anbiya عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ (Alayhimus-salam) Ke Wirasat Hoate Hai ❓| Junaid Rehman Podcast
The Sunni and Shia views on the property of the Prophet Muhammad—most notably the case of the agricultural lands of Fadak—differ sharply over hadith authenticity, inheritance laws, and political legitimacy.
Sunni View
• The Hadith of Inheritance: Sunni Islam accepts a well-known hadith narrated by Abu Bakr stating: "We (the prophets) do not leave an inheritance; what we leave behind is charity (Sadaqah)."
• Public Wealth (Sadaqah): Based on this tradition, Sunni scholars maintain that the personal wealth and properties accumulated by the Prophet (such as the lands of Fadak) did not pass down as private family inheritance to his daughter Fatima. Instead, they became state property or public trust (charity) administered by the Caliph for the benefit of the community and the poor.
• Abu Bakr’s Decision: The first Caliph, Abu Bakr, withheld the property from Fatima based on this prophetic ruling, an action viewed by Sunni tradition as a strict and faithful application of the Prophet's instructions rather than a personal injustice.
Shia View
• Rejection of the Hadith: Shia Islam rejects the authenticity of the "prophets leave no inheritance" hadith, viewing it as a fabrication or a misinterpretation used to sideline the Ahl al-Bayt (the Prophet's household).
• Qur'anic Precedents: Shia scholars point to Qur'anic verses on inheritance—such as prophets like Solomon inheriting from David (Surah An-Naml 27:16) and Zakariya praying for an heir to inherit from him (Surah Maryam 19:5–6)—arguing that prophets do pass down material and spiritual inheritance.
• Fadak as Private Property: Shia tradition holds that Fadak was acquired by the Prophet without military conquest (as a gift or peaceful surrender), making it his personal private property.
• Claim of Injustice: Fatima claimed Fadak both as a rightful legal inheritance and as a gift given to her by the Prophet during his lifetime. Shia Islam views Abu Bakr's refusal of her claim—and the rejection of her witnesses (including Ali and others)—as a political maneuver tied to the broader dispute over the Caliphate after the Prophet's death.
