Chemotherapy can attack cancer, but it can also damage the rapidly dividing cells that line the mouth and gastrointestinal tract. That damage can contribute to mucositis, diarrhea, dehydration, weight loss, and disruption of the intestinal barrier.
A 2026 peer-reviewed study published in Frontiers in Nutrition investigated an unusual approach: combining 2′-fucosyllactose (2′-FL), a human milk oligosaccharide, with magnesium and electrolytes in the medical food HuMOLYTE.
In this video, we break down the science behind the study and explain:
• What chemotherapy-induced mucositis does to the gut
• How epithelial cells and tight junctions form the intestinal barrier
• Why mucin and goblet cells matter
• Why researchers investigated 2′-FL and magnesium together
• What happened when HuMOLYTE was tested with multiple chemotherapy drugs in Wistar rats
• What researchers observed in intestinal and oral tissue
• How laboratory experiments measured intestinal barrier integrity and mucin production
• Whether HuMOLYTE interfered with chemotherapy's effects on the cancer cells tested
• What these findings may mean for future supportive-care research
The study reported reduced diarrhea and weight loss, preservation of intestinal architecture, improved measures of barrier integrity, and increased mucin production in its preclinical models.
Important context: these published findings are based primarily on animal and laboratory cell models. They should not be interpreted as proof that HuMOLYTE prevents chemotherapy-induced mucositis or gastrointestinal injury in humans.
Study:
“Supplementation with 2′-fucosyllactose, a prebiotic human milk oligosaccharide (HMO), in a magnesium-containing medical food reduces chemotherapy-induced mucositis in Wistar rats.”
