🔴 Live from Hanover: World Premiere, 1,000km+ Range, Subcooled Liquid H2 (sLH2), 10-Min Refuel & ProCabin!
We are live from the official Mercedes-Benz Trucks exhibition showcase inside Hall 19/20 at IAA Transportation 2026 at Deutsche Messe Hannover in Germany! While battery-electric tractor units excel on predictable regional trunking and mid-range operations, trans-continental transport operators, heavy logistics giants, and zero-emission freight purists face tough payload penalties and lengthy charging stops on multi-day cross-border runs. Packing the Mercedes-Benz stand for the most anticipated hydrogen breakthrough of the decade, visitors are witnessing the dawn of heavy long-haul decarbonization. Meet the groundbreaking, production-ready 2027 Mercedes-Benz NextGenH2 Truck! Representing the evolution of the record-breaking GenH2 prototype into a near-series production reality, this liquid-hydrogen-powered 44-tonne long-haul tractor unit arrives in Hanover to demonstrate how subcooled liquid hydrogen (sLH2), over 1,000 kilometers of range on a single fill, a 10-to-15-minute refuel, and a 25-tonne payload capacity combine into an uncompromising zero-emission flagship.
Commanding the exhibition pavilion in its futuristic metallic silver livery with distinctive liquid-hydrogen cyan accents—featuring Mercedes-Benz's wind-cheating ProCabin design with an 80-millimetre extended aerodynamic front nose, a sealed front intake shield, side aerodynamic cab flaps, full underbody air cladding, darkened Matrix LED headlights, and aerodynamic 22.5-inch alloy wheels—the NextGenH2 slashes aerodynamic drag, maximizing every kilogram of stored fuel. In place of standard exterior mirrors, the truck features MirrorCam 2 digital camera wings, streaming high-definition night-vision imagery to interior A-pillar screens. Under the cab and frame lies the engineering marvel: by choosing subcooled liquid hydrogen (sLH2) stored at -253°C rather than bulky 700-bar compressed gas, Daimler achieves 50% higher energy density in lightweight, vacuum-insulated stainless steel tanks mounted between the axles. Carrying up to 85 kg of liquid hydrogen, the NextGenH2 delivers a proven real-world highway range exceeding 1,000 km (621 miles) under full 40-to-44-tonne payloads, while refuelling takes just 10 to 15 minutes at automated sLH2 stations—matching the operational turnaround of a conventional diesel rig.
Power generation is driven by the cellcentric BZA150 twin fuel-cell modules (developed in joint venture with Volvo Group) delivering a continuous 300 kW net electrical output, supported by a 101 kWh LFP high-voltage buffer battery that supplies an additional 400 kW of instant boost power for steep highway gradients. Channeled through the integrated 800V eAxle and 4-speed transmission borrowed directly from the series-production eActros 600, the powertrain delivers whisper-quiet, instant torque with outstanding hill-climbing power. Mercedes engineers packaged the fuel-cell ancillaries into a compact "Torre Tecnológica" behind the cab, maintaining a standard 4,000 mm wheelbase for full compatibility with standard European semi-trailers.
Step inside the aerodynamic ProCabin via the illuminated entrance steps onto a flat walk-through floor to experience an ultra-quiet, vibration-free mobile work and living environment. The driver commands the motorway from an orthopaedic air-suspended comfort seat facing the Multimedia Cockpit Interactive 2 with dual curved screens, integrating commercial truck navigation, live hydrogen infrastructure station status, and hydrogen fuel management. Multi-stage hydrogen leak sniffer sensors ensure safe overnight sleeping in the dual-bunk rest quarters. Backed by Active Drive Assist 3, Active Brake Assist 6, Active Sideguard Assist 2, and multi-stage regenerative braking, the 2027 Mercedes-Benz NextGenH2 sets the gold standard for long-haul hydrogen mobility as it enters customer pilot fleets with logistics leaders like Dachser. Join us for a detailed 4K walkaround exploring the liquid H2 tanks, cellcentric fuel-cell system, eAxle chassis, and ProCabin interior!
