In This Part :
Ohm's Law and Resistance: Ohm's law states that the intensity of electric current flowing through a conductor is directly proportional to the potential difference across its terminals at a constant temperature. Electrical resistance is defined as the ratio of the potential difference (measured in volts) to the current intensity (measured in amperes), and its unit is the ohm
Connecting Resistors: Resistors can be connected in series (along one continuous path) to obtain a large equivalent resistance, or in parallel (along branching paths) to obtain a small equivalent resistance. In a series connection, if a component is damaged, the current flow is cut off in the whole circuit, whereas in a parallel connection, current only stops flowing through the damaged component.
Real-Life Applications: Household electrical appliances are connected in parallel so that each appliance can operate independently; if one is damaged or turned off, the others continue to work. In medicine, pacemakers use a battery and microchip to send micro electrical pulses to the heart, stimulating the heart muscle to contract regularly for people with irregular heartbeats.
Electric Power and Energy Cost: Electric power is the amount of electrical energy an appliance consumes per second, and it is measured in watts The cost of electrical energy consumption is calculated by converting power to kilowatts (kW), multiplying by the operating hours to find the energy consumed in kilowatt-hours (kW.h), and then multiplying by the price per kilowatt-hour.
Safety Precautions: When dealing with electricity, you must keep tools dry and never touch wires with wet hands because tap water conducts electricity. Additionally, wires must be properly insulated to avoid electric shock, and you should avoid connecting several high-power appliances to one socket to prevent overloading and potential fires.
