Blockbuster origin story, told in full: a fight over paint colors, a garbage-company founder who bought in anyway, a $50 million offer that may never have been laughed at, a late fee that came back under a new name, and a store in Oregon that still runs on floppy disks. This documentary covers how Blockbuster started, how it grew to 9,094 stores, why late fees were a sixth of its revenue, the Netflix meeting, the Carl Icahn board fight, the 2010 bankruptcy and the $320 million sale to Dish.
In 2004 Blockbuster ran 9,094 stores and employed 84,300 people. Today, as far as anyone can tell, one franchise is left, in Bend, Oregon.
In this documentary: David Cook and the first Blockbuster in Dallas (1985), Wayne Huizenga, Viacom's $8.4 billion Paramount fight, late fees as a forecast, the 2000 Netflix meeting, the 2005 end-of-late-fees promise and the restocking fee, the Antioco and Icahn fight, Jim Keyes, Redbox, the September 2010 Chapter 11 filing, the Dish sale, and the last store in Bend.
Blockbuster was never really built on movies. It was built on your forgetfulness. The only question left is which company today is quietly built on the thing you keep putting off.
Play along: three trivia quizzes (Cook's software clients, what Viacom paid, the 2011 sale price). Guess in the comments before the reveal. And tell us: what was the first movie you ever rented?
Figures are as of October 2026. The Bend store status is from press reports (early 2026).
