Before cities, writing, electricity or even agriculture, prehistoric humans still had something we often forget: free time. So what did they actually do for pleasure? We can’t interview anyone who lived tens of thousands of years ago, and archaeology rarely gives us a direct record of a person's emotions. But traces of music, art, play, decorated objects, social gatherings and other forms of leisure give us clues about how people may have spent time when they weren't hunting, gathering or surviving. Prehistoric humans made pigments and art, produced objects whose purposes weren't purely practical, and may have used music and rhythm for social and emotional purposes. Archaeologists have also found evidence that children played with objects and explored their environments in ways that resemble play in later human societies. And pleasure probably wasn't limited to art or games. Eating, dancing, storytelling, social bonding, intimacy and simply spending time with other people may all have been part of human life — although many of these activities leave little or no archaeological trace. In this video, we explore what prehistoric humans may have done for fun, relaxation, connection and pleasure before civilization changed the way humans lived. I'm Eric King, and I created this channel to explore history, ancient humans and psychology through stories that are worth looking at more closely. I love learning, reading and digging into the details behind ideas that are often repeated without much context. Because the evidence is incomplete, this video separates what archaeology can actually show from what researchers can only reasonably infer. It was created using AI-assisted tools as part of the research, visual development and production process, together with editing and other creative tools.
