How can the same wireless signal reach a receiver through multiple paths?
In the real world, radio waves don't always travel directly from transmitter to receiver.
They can reflect, scatter and diffract from buildings, walls, vehicles and other objects.
As a result, multiple copies of the transmitted signal can arrive at the receiver with different:
Amplitudes
Phases
Propagation delays
Angles of arrival
When these copies combine, they can interfere constructively or destructively.
This phenomenon is known as multipath fading.
In this episode, we visually explore:
📡 How multipath propagation happens
📡 Reflections and multiple signal paths
📡 Why delayed copies arrive at different times
📡 Constructive and destructive interference
📡 How multipath can strengthen or weaken the received signal
📡 Why a small change in position can cause large changes in received power
📡 The connection between multipath propagation and fading
The key idea:
The receiver doesn't necessarily see one copy of the transmitted signal — it can see many copies arriving with different delays and phases.
And when those copies combine, the result can be very different from what was transmitted.
