World No. 1 Elena Rybakina has withdrawn from the Wuhan Open with a foot
injury, and Alex Eala is now seeded 16th in a draw that just lost seven
players. Is this her moment?
On Sunday, October 4, the Wuhan Open announced that world No. 1 Elena
Rybakina had pulled out of the tournament with a foot injury, one day
after losing to world No. 118 Alina Charaeva in the second round of the
China Open in Beijing. It was her first match since winning the US Open
and claiming the top ranking. Rybakina has been managing a lower leg and
foot problem for months, the same issue that forced her to retire from
her Cincinnati quarterfinal against Iga Swiatek in August. She has been
replaced in the Wuhan draw by Liudmila Samsonova.
Rybakina is the seventh pre-tournament withdrawal. Amanda Anisimova,
Madison Keys, Emma Navarro and Karolina Pliskova are also out.
That leaves Alex Eala, ranked No. 18 in the world, seeded 16th at the
final WTA 1000 event of the season. Her seeding is better than her
ranking because of who is missing. She has zero ranking points to defend
in Wuhan, and a career record of 0-2 there: she has never won a main
draw match at this tournament.
In this video we break down what the withdrawals actually change for
Alex Eala, how her seeding moved, what each round in Wuhan is worth,
why Rybakina is losing 215 points this week without playing, and what
Eala has to do to turn the widest opening of her season into a result.
The Wuhan Open runs October 12 to 18 at the Optics Valley International
Tennis Center, with a total prize commitment of $4,088,211 and 1,000
ranking points for the champion.
