In 1526, a homeless prince marched twelve thousand men against the Sultan of Delhi's hundred thousand. His name was Babur — and with matchlocks, cannons, and a flank trick no one in India had ever seen, he destroyed an army eight times his size on the plain of Panipat. The empire he founded would rule a quarter of the world, mint a quarter of the world's wealth, and leave behind the most beautiful building ever raised by human hands: the Taj Mahal.
This is the story of the Mughal Empire: the refugee emperor who lost his throne to a lion-king and won it back, the boy on the throne who invented religious tolerance and made India the richest land on earth, the marble cities and the miniatures painted with squirrel-hair brushes, the son who locked his father in a tower to stare at the Taj across the river, the emperor who bled the treasury dry in an endless southern war, the Persian conqueror who stripped Delhi bare — and the last Mughal, a pensioner-poet of a trading company, who watched it all burn in 1857.
