This video is a recording of a live Artist talk from Thursday, March 5, 2026, with Ember De Boer about her exhibition Impression//Path that was held at Gallery 625 in Woodland, CA from on view February 2 - March 17, 2026.
“If there is magic on this planet, it is contained in water.”
“I was three fourths water, rising and subsiding according to the hollow knocking in my veins; a minute pulse like the eternal pulse that lifts the Himalayas and which, in the following systole, will carry them away.”
-Immense Journey, Loren Eiseley
A winding river carves a formidable canyon, creates a lush wetland, and feeds a babbling brook full of life-
As we travel our daily lives, follow the river of action, and carve a path of integrity and choice, we impress ourselves upon our environment. Yet as we take up space, seek out curiosities we are impressed upon by the wonder of our surroundings. “Impression” as in the marks that only time and experience could leave on our thoughts and ideas.
In this exhibition sculptural form annotates the path, symbolized and inspired by many winding and meandering rivers. Both the positive and the negative shapes tell a story of time, transition, and process. Layers that reveal the truth and context; we inherently create by externalization. Represented by circular, wall-hanging sculptures of river abstractions, layered assemblage, and textures these concepts find form in the metaphors of material.
Water is vital for life, and vital to our region. Sacramento was built out of the flood plains, in the heart of the valley. This exhibition features art works that represent the rich history of our region through the narrative of water use, and flooding. These works highlight the vital choices that lie ahead and the challenges that face us as we decide the future of water in our region.
This exhibition uses translucent acrylic and resin to extend the experience of water as a light shimmer on the gallery wall. Abstract representations of the internal landscape, intense feelings expressed through sentimental deconstructed forms, inspired by local ecosystems of earth, soil, and water.
We are connected to this rhythm. Simply by living, consuming, and breathing we create a wake in our path, every action connected.
