2026-08-23 - Genesis 21:8-34 - Grace for the Outcast

There are at least two levels to the story of Hagar and Ishmael's departure from Abraham, Sarah and Isaac: It is a painful parting for Abraham, especially since Ishmael is his firstborn son, but it solidifies Isaac's role as the son of promise, the one through whom the Lord promised the blessing of every family on earth. In an inspired commentary on this passage, the apostle Paul teaches that Hagar and Ishmael represent slavery to the Law as well as every other attempt to accomplish God's will through human effort, while Sarah and Isaac represent the freedom we enjoy in Christ by faith, not by works. On another level, Hagar is more than a stand-in for slavery to the Law - she is an outcast woman in a desperate situation, and God meets her there and provides for her, much as our Lord Jesus did many centuries later when He met another outcast woman near a well and offered her the water of eternal life.
