Before You Use Your Next Sanitary Pad, Watch This

Researchers tested sanitary pads sold in Nigeria and detected 17 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) across the samples studied. But what does this actually mean for women who use sanitary pads every month? In this video, I break down the research in simple English and explain what was found, why some of these chemicals have raised health concerns, and most importantly, what the study does NOT prove. We discuss: • The study involving 65 sanitary pad samples from 16 brands • What volatile organic compounds (VOCs) actually are • Why exposure level matters when discussing possible health effects • Whether this research proves sanitary pads cause infertility, irregular periods or cancer • Why some women experience itching, burning or irritation when using certain pads • What to do if a particular sanitary pad repeatedly irritates you • Other menstrual products including menstrual cups, period underwear, reusable pads and tampons • Why proper testing, monitoring and regulation of menstrual products matter Important: The detection of potentially concerning chemicals in sanitary pads does not automatically mean normal sanitary pad use causes infertility or cancer.
