Text from the Gospel & Homily
The Lord be with you. And with your spirit.
A reading from the holy gospel according to Matthew. Glory to you, o Lord.
When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, and one of them, a scholar of the law tested him by asking, "Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?" He said to him, "You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and first commandment. The second is like it: you shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments."
The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.
One of the lessons that a child learns as they shortly after they grow out of the toddler state is that when they're eating parents will say, finish your plate. You're not leaving this table until you've finished your plate. And of course, what they're really trying to get at is the underlying principle is, don't waste. There are people around the world that would love to have the food that's on your plate. Don't waste it. What you take eat it. Don't waste. Of course, the child they want to play outside, play on their phones, play video games, play with their siblings, whatever; they have something else on their mind. But the sense of don't waste. When we think of this commandment that we just heard the Lord saying love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind and soul what is the biggest challenge in doing that? Because we all want to do that. And it all begins with recognizing that God has filled our plate every day with his love. That if we want to love the Lord it starts with recognizing the love that he has poured out upon us. Every day the Lord has filled the plate of our heart with his love. And yet what is the biggest challenge? That unfortunately the biggest waste in the entire world is that the love that God pours out for the most part is not received. And is not taken into our hearts. To love the Lord our God with all our heart, with all our mind, with all our soul, it begins with what God has done for us. And what is that challenge? What leads our hearts away from finishing the plate of grace that the Lord gives us? Distraction. We can get distracted so easy because all of us want to love the Lord and love our neighbor with everything. But poof, even now as we're praying along with this mass you've probably already had different distractions that come into your mind. Oh, there's football later, or what's for dinner, now that we're talking about food. Whatever. But the same thing happens within our everyday life. God has given us opportunities to serve one another to love one another. Has put that on our plate. And so often poof, it just goes out of our mind. Often times our worries, our anxieties, distract us from the love of God. So unfortunately, what is the biggest waste around the world, is God's love. Let us be a soul, let us be a heart that is willing to gather God's love. To recognize that God is giving us every day opportunities every day to live in his love. Let us not let God's love go to waste.
