The Shree Mata Vaishno Devi Yatra is one of the most revered pilgrimages in India, located in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. It attracts millions of devotees every year who come to seek blessings from the Hindu goddess Vaishno Devi. Here is a full description of the yatra:
Registration:- The registration process is entirely FREE and is fully computerized. This process is carried out at the Yatra Registration Counter, popularly known as (YRC), situated at Bus stand, Katra. Under this, each yatri is photographed on spot after registering his/her name, basic information and he/she is issued a RFID Yatra Access card which is the documentary permission for him/her to proceed on the journey to the main Shrine. Yatri is required to cross the first Check Post located at Banganga (around 1.5 kilometers from the YRC) within 6 hours of the issue of the RFID Card, failing which his/her Yatra Acces Card is confiscated at the Check Post and yatri is required to take a fresh Yatra Access Card altogether. The entire Yatra Registration process is fully computerized, thus making it convenient, efficient and smooth. It is to be noted that yatries who proceed without FRID yatra access card shall be turned back from Banganga check post and not allowed to proceed further. In the rare case of any yatri being found at Bhawan/en-route without RFID yatra access card, he/she shall not only be turned back but disciplinary action shall also be taken against him/her.
The Trek: The main mode of transportation for the yatra is on foot. The trek from Katra to the Vaishno Devi shrine is approximately 13 kilometers long. The path is well-paved and properly maintained, with resting points and refreshment stalls along the way.
Ban Ganga: Around 2.5 kilometers from Katra, pilgrims reach the first significant point of the yatra called Ban Ganga. It is believed that Mata Vaishno Devi took a bath at this spot before proceeding further.
Charan Paduka: After crossing Ban Ganga, pilgrims reach Charan Paduka, which is around 1.5 kilometers from Ban Ganga. It is believed to be the place where Mata Vaishno Devi halted to rest, leaving her footprints on a rock. Many pilgrims stop here to pay their respects.
Adhkuwari: Continuing the journey from Charan Paduka, pilgrims reach Adhkuwari after approximately 6 kilometers. Adhkuwari is a cave where Mata Vaishno Devi meditated for nine months. The cave has a narrow passage where pilgrims have to crawl to move forward. It can be quite challenging but is considered an essential part of the yatra.
Bhawan: After crossing Adhkuwari, pilgrims finally reach Bhawan, the main shrine of Vaishno Devi. It is located at an altitude of 5,200 feet. The shrine consists of three holy pindis (rocks) representing the three forms of the goddess - Maha Kali, Maha Lakshmi, and Maha Saraswati. Devotees offer prayers and seek blessings at the shrine.
Bhairon Temple: Some pilgrims also visit the Bhairon Temple, located approximately 3 kilometers from the main shrine. It is believed that the yatra is incomplete without paying homage at this temple.
Return Journey: After seeking the blessings of the goddess, pilgrims start their return journey back to Katra. They follow the same route while descending from the mountains.
