Henry Ford set out to grow his own rubber in the Amazon, on two and a half million acres along the Tapajós River, and built an American town to go with it: Fordlândia.
So how did the richest industrialist in the world lose a twenty-million-dollar gamble to the jungle?
We follow the company's own films of the 1930s and 1940s: the river landing, the American-style houses, the hospital, the water tower, and the Midwestern rules Ford's managers brought with them, down to the food served in the cafeterias. Then the night at the end of 1930 when the workers smashed the cafeteria, the riot remembered as the Breaking of the Pans; rubber trees planted so close together that South American leaf blight swept through them; a second start downriver at Belterra; and the synthetic rubber that made the whole project unnecessary.
What you're seeing: Ford Motor Company's own films, found on the Internet Archive (Rubber Empire from 1932, Ford Brazilian Rubber Plantation from 1940 and Rubber for America from 1941 among them), Army Signal Corps film from a synthetic rubber plant in Akron in 1944, Smithsonian material, and pictures by the photographers named at the bottom of this page. A few shots show the site as it looks now. No frame here was generated or altered by AI. The voice that narrates and the score underneath it were. Our part: the writing, the cut, the slow pans across still photos and the captions.
Would you have taken a job in Fordlândia in 1930?
