In the first part we went inside the vast German prisoner-of-war camp near Krems, in Austria, and saw its two faces — grim but survivable for the four thousand American airmen made famous by a Hollywood film, and something else entirely for the Soviet prisoners held behind an inner fence and deliberately left to starve. We left the story in the spring of 1945, with the Red Army approaching and the order given to empty the camp. This is the second part: the march west, the end, and the thousands who never marched anywhere.
