2001: A Space Odyssey (1968): The Deleted Scene That Revealed The Aliens' True Purpose
After the 1968 premiere, Stanley Kubrick cut the film by roughly seventeen to nineteen minutes, depending on the source, and reportedly ordered most of the unused material destroyed. In this video we show what really remains of it: discarded ideas, the words of the people who made the film, and traces of scenes nobody will ever see again. With every fact we tell you where the information comes from and how far it can be trusted.
Fourteen hidden truths: the nuclear ending Kubrick threw away, the IBM code hidden in HAL's name, the math inside the monolith, the 1980 phone call in which Kubrick himself explained the ending, the moon landing conspiracy and the French film that fed it, the rings of Saturn that defeated Kubrick, the song HAL sings that came from a real computer, the clear monolith that became a sculpture, the aliens Kubrick chose not to show, two ways to read HAL, the destroyed sets and the cut minutes, and a warning about artificial intelligence.
If you love classic science fiction and stories from sets that still surprise us, this video is for you!
