Today we're listening to Styx's “Pieces of Eight” and “Aku-Aku,” two contrasting tracks that bring the band's 1978 album Pieces of Eight to a memorable conclusion.
Known for blending progressive rock, hard rock, theatrical songwriting, and rich instrumental arrangements, Styx developed a distinctive musical identity that combines ambitious compositions with accessible melodies.
Written by Dennis DeYoung, “Pieces of Eight” explores themes of ambition, material wealth, and the pursuit of success. Its dramatic musical character complements the song's philosophical message, creating a powerful example of storytelling through rock music.
The album then closes with “Aku-Aku,” a short instrumental composed by Tommy Shaw, offering a contrasting atmosphere and a more reflective musical conclusion.
As two classical musicians, we're especially interested in the harmonic progressions, melodic development, keyboard and guitar textures, rhythmic changes, dynamic contrasts, and the relationship between these two compositions.
What makes this pairing particularly fascinating is the way Styx uses musical contrast to shape the listener's experience. The intensity and dramatic character of “Pieces of Eight” give way to the gentler instrumental atmosphere of “Aku-Aku,” creating a sense of resolution.
It's a wonderful example of how progressive rock can borrow ideas from classical music, particularly in its attention to structure, thematic development, and the expressive possibilities of instrumental arrangement.
