On the day of the Bestowing, every son of King Ostmar puts his palm on the sea-stone and walks out with a province. Hadrik gets the northern march. Cael, the favorite, gets Lowmere, the richest fen country in the kingdom. Severin, the ninth son of a palace laundress, gets Skerrow: a black rock on the edge of the deadliest reef in the south, the size of a kitchen table. The navy rows him out to it, leaves him a barrel of water and a flag, and takes the boat back. The court laughs for a week. Nobody reads the line the stone wrote under his name: Skerrow doubles each night that no one drowns in its water. Its water grows with it. Every midnight, new land rises from the sea and sets down whatever is floating there, fish, boats, people. A ship's boy, a pearl diver, two rival pirate captains, forty-one survivors of a wrecked cog and six thousand refugees from a drowned province all end up on a rock where the only law is that nobody gets left in the water. Then the court finally reads the line, does the sum, and sends Cael with nine warships and forty men in chains. One to drown every night. In thirty days, the royal fleet comes back to collect the tithe. Or his bones. #manhwarecap #manhuarecap #kingdombuilding #exiledprince #weaktostrong #exponential #island #fantasy
