Tonight, fall asleep inside one small frame farmhouse on 160 acres of southern Minnesota, through a single turn of the year in 1884. A Norwegian American family of seven and a summer hired man lived on what they could grow, kill, and store, with no store to reach once the snow closed the roads. Their wheat sold for around 72 cents a bushel, hauled to the railroad 20 wagonloads at a time, while a single Fifth Avenue ball that same season was reported to cost $250,000. In October the cellar shelves stood crowded to the beams; by March they were nearly bare. This is the calm, warm, hour-by-hour story of how an ordinary American family carried itself safely through one whole year.

In this video, we talk about how an 1880s Minnesota farm family actually lived its hours, including the March cellar at the bottom of its stores, the spring plowing and the seed grain, the kitchen garden and the daily milking, the long light of June, the race to get the hay up dry, the wheat harvest and the horse-drawn binder, the shocks across the stubble, the threshing ring and the enormous threshers' table, the wagon road to town, the fall canning and the root cellar filling, the November hog butchering, the Christmas kitchen of lefse and the seven kinds, the deep snowbound winter, and the cellar shelves that told the whole year at a single glance.
