John Taske survived Rob Hall's ill-fated 1996 Mt Everest expedition, which was depicted in the motion picture "Everest" and documented in Jon Krakauer's best-selling book "Into Thin Air." In this 57-minute documentary, you'll follow the real John Taske returning to the Himalaya with a new expedition team for an attempt on Cho Oyu, the world's sixth highest mountain and one of only fourteen mountains higher than 8000 meters (26,000 feet). Often considered a major-league warm up by climbers preparing for Mt Everest, Cho Oyu presents similar bone-chilling, –40 degree temperatures and extreme, oxygen-deprived altitudes known as the death zone. This team's hardships test not only physical endurance but also judgment and character. Ultimately lessons from the journey may prove more important than the goal. Marty and his son Denali lost their lives in an avalanche while attempting the first father-son ascent of K2. In “High Ambitions in the Himalaya,” Marty made a handful of cameo appearances. It didn’t take much camera time to grab a sense of Marty’s spiritual connection to mountains and indigenous cultures. In the expedition season that unfolded in this film, Marty was instrumental in the rescue of a climber who suffered an altitude-induced stroke. Later, after guiding another climber to the Cho Oyu summit and back to basecamp, Marty additionally made one more trip to the summit, this time setting a Cho Oyu solo ascent speed record.
