The latest from the *Mamta Kafle Bhatt* murder trial. A realtor who knew the defendant through the Nepali community testified about the weeks after Mamta disappeared — including a request to help sell the family home. This is his testimony, with the defense's cross-examination kept in full. From the trial of **Naresh Bhatt**, accused of killing his wife, **Mamta Kafle Bhatt**, a 28-year-old nurse and new mother, in their Manassas Park, Virginia home.
Ganesh Pandey, a realtor, testified that the defendant and Mamta came to his home for dinner in mid-July 2024 and seemed, in his words, "perfectly normal, fine, and happy." He said the defendant dropped baby Nima at his house on August 15, 2024 — the only time, and it was the defendant, not Mamta. After learning from social media that Mamta was missing, Pandey said he spoke with the defendant by phone, and the defendant was "very sad," said he was praying for Mamta's return, and said he had lost his job. Pandey testified that the defendant then asked him to sell the house — privately and off-market first — and that he declined, saying he did not want to be involved.
The prosecution asked Pandey about traditional marriage roles in Nepali culture. On cross-examination, the defense emphasized that those traditions have shifted in the Nepali community in America — that women work, wear what they choose, and own assets — and that an off-market sale is simply a cheaper, as-is way to sell, consistent with the defendant's stated financial trouble. The defense also underscored that Pandey saw the couple as happy; on redirect, the prosecution noted that people can "put on a facade."
This is testimony from the Commonwealth's case, presented with the defense's cross-examination. These are the witness's accounts; nothing here is a finding of fact. What any of it means is for the jury to weigh.
Mamta Kafle Bhatt was last seen in late July 2024 and has never been found.
