Requesting workplace accommodations for an invisible condition can feel complicated, especially when decisions about disclosure are shaped by stigma, workplace culture, and fear of being misunderstood. Drawing from my experience building enterprise human resources policies and accessibility frameworks, as well as requesting accommodations for my own Type 1 diabetes and ADHD, I will share lessons from both sides of the process. This includes what I learned when one of my own accommodation requests was denied and how I determined what to do next. Participants will explore when to disclose, when to wait, what information to share, and how to make a clear request without overexplaining or apologizing. Attendees will leave with a practical framework and resources from the Job Accommodation Network that can be adapted across diverse workplaces, from large corporations with formal human resources systems to small organizations with limited support. Reflecting the summit theme, “Diverse Resources for Diverse People,” this session recognizes that no two employees, health needs, or workplaces are the same. Participants will gain flexible tools to advocate for the support they need with greater clarity and confidence. #WorkplaceAccommodations #InvisibleDisabilities #Type1Diabetes #POCLWDSummit #DiversityInDiabetes
