In Roman cargo ships, enslaved people slept without soft bedding, yet their bodies found rest — and this is how they did it. The answer is quieter than suffering — it is about how the human frame adapts to impossible conditions, finding rest in darkness without comfort. Ancient ships still hold the evidence in their wooden hulls, and archaeologists have pieced together the sleeping places people created in those holds. If you drift to sleep before this story ends, that is exactly where you were meant to be. Settle in, and let your own body find the rest that theirs learned to find so long ago.
