Hopkins Hour: Worth Asking: accessible communication in healthcare and research

The Hopkins Centre recently hosted a Hopkins Hour webinar, Worth Asking: accessible communication in healthcare and research, on Wednesday 23rd September 2026. Hosted by Hopkins and Inclusive Futures researcher Dr Kelsey Chapman, the session featured findings from Hopkins seed grant project on co-producing resources for clinicians and people with Spinal Cord Injuries in Queensland. Dr Chapman was also joined by Chec del Mundo on See Me. Hear Me. Respect Me project, Gillian Hermosa-Silva on Julian's Key Health Passport, plus Rhonda Beggs and Dr Delena Amsters on Talking Mats. Asking a question sounds simple. In practice it depends on having the right information, in the right format, at a moment when someone is willing to wait for the answer. For people with SCI, ABI, and disability, particularly people with communication support requirements, these conditions can be created through simple techniques, tools, and campaigns. This Hopkins Hour session looked at what it takes to close the gap and the practical approaches already being used to do it. The session featured You CAN Ask That, a co-designed resource supporting people with spinal cord injuries to ask the questions that matter most to them, alongside presentations about accessible communication tools and methods drawn from both clinical practice and research.
