A growing crisis of violence is gripping KwaZulu-Natal, where classrooms and school grounds are increasingly turning into crime scenes. From the fatal shooting of a Grade 10 learner at Kwandengezi Intermediate School by an assailant disguised in a uniform, to a deadly robbery at Inanda Comprehensive High, and a violent attack in Bester that left two teenagers dead, the safety of our education system is under severe threat. As teacher unions like SADTU sound the alarm over the overwhelming trauma and fear gripping both educators and pupils, we ask: how did our schools become target zones, and what urgent steps must be taken to restore them as safe havens for learning?
