山と海の教室 #006｜海の道を見つめた城、甘崎城

Through the mountains and sea, the island’s plants and wildlife, its satoyama woodlands and satoumi coastal waters, and the lives of the people who inhabit them, the series explores the relationship between nature and human life on the island. A small island in the sea. Now covered in trees, this entire island was once a castle. In this episode, on-site commentary, live-action footage, historical sources, and character illustrations bring us closer to the history of Amazaki Castle and the Murakami Kaizoku. Through the island’s present-day landscape, we trace the people and changing times that shaped its past. Our aim is to bring back an environment where fish can once again gather in the waters around Omishima. Trees cut from the mountains are given a new role beneath the sea — as places where new life can gather and grow. From the people who continue this practice in Otsuki, we learn which trees are best suited for Shibazuke, how the branches are assembled and submerged, and why fish are drawn to these underwater structures. Throughout “Living Together with the Mountain and Sea, Omishima,” we follow the island’s coastal plants and seaweeds — including eelgrass, Sargassum, and Ruppia maritima — as well as efforts to restore marine habitats through Shibazuke. We document the entire process: cutting bamboo and other trees, building the structures, placing them beneath the sea, observing them over time, and watching for the changes that occur as marine life begins to gather. The series also explores many other stories across Omishima: a farmer who grows the island’s traditional small mikan oranges; students from Omishima High School’s Island Design Club guiding us along the Omotesando approach; the history of Oyamazumi Shrine and the island; the story of Amazaki Castle; and the clearing of overgrown woodland to restore long-lost views from the island’s observation points. Through these stories, we document the many ways in which the lives of people on Omishima continue to connect the mountain and the sea. Through the people working in forestry, local history and culture, marine restoration, landscape conservation, and other fields, we consider what the future of Omishima might look like.
