Eva and Tianran travel to Wuzhen for its International Theatre Festival, when the entire water town transforms into one big stage. After a tranquil boat ride along the canals, they meet actor Huang Lei, one of the festival’s co-founders, and hear his philosophy on food and theatre. Passing through a lively costumed carnival, the hosts sample “victory cake” and bump into Peter the Clown. At a traditional soy sauce factory, they discover how soybeans are naturally fermented, then taste marinated duck before ending the night with a bowl of “scholar’s noodles” whose origins date back to the Mongol invasion of southern China. The next morning, after a hearty canal-side breakfast, Eva and Tianran join an acting workshop with director Ding Yiteng, then apprentice under an opera-singing chef who teaches them how to make fish meatballs. Their visit culminates in an theatre performance where Eva is pulled up on stage, before they sit down to a hotpot banquet that stretches the length of Wuzhen’s cobbled streets. #whatdochinesepeopleeat #chinesefoodshow Timestamps 00:00 – Boating along Wuzhen’s canals 05:26 – Ding Sheng Gao “Victory Cake” 07:48 – Traditional soy sauce factory 10:53 – Costumes and carnival 12:54 – Late night “scholar’s noodles” 15:32 – Morning market & fresh water chestnuts 17:12 – Canal-side breakfast 18:42 – Acting workshop 20:28 – Visiting an opera-singing chef 21:36 – Making fish meatballs 24:11 – “Reflection” at the Wuzhen Water Theatre 25:43 – Street banquet New episodes every week.
