Timothy Watkins Jr., universally known as "The Sweet Soca Man" or simply "Baron," is a Trinidadian calypso and soca legend whose silky voice defined a golden era of Caribbean music. Born in 1947 in Bamboo Village, Trinidad, he began his musical journey singing Baptist spirituals in his parents' church before making his official calypso debut in 1971. Over the decades, his smooth, distinctive vocal style produced a massive catalog of hits, including "Doh Rock It So," "Melosian Rhapsody," "Somebody," and "Sweet Soca Man". For those like me me who came up in the 90s, Baron's tracks were the undisputed soundtrack to Caribbean gatherings. I am grateful to have experienced enjoying his live along with Sugar Aloes during a live concert on St. Lucia during the covid pandemic. For me, his music was essential at New York City backyard parties and Saint Lucian old-school jams, where his infectious melodies instantly packed the dance floor and brought everyone together for a chip and a wine. Recently, the beloved artist has been battling serious health challenges. Following a government grant to assist with his medical expenses earlier this year, fellow artists and supporters are rallying around him. A special Christmas benefit concert in his honor is scheduled for Sunday, November 8, 2026, at the Bishop Anstey High School East and Trinity College East hall to celebrate his lasting cultural legacy and support his recovery.
