Someone's carrying the roast to the table, the plates are still warm, and before anyone sits down, Dad goes to the record player and puts on the same old record he always played. Two hours of warm, vintage 1940s jazz from the family living room. You could hear it from every room. From the kitchen, from the hallway, from the table where everybody was talking over each other. You didn't know the names of the songs back then. You just knew it meant everyone was home. Muted trumpet, tenor sax and a gentle piano trio, slow and warm, like an old record that's been played every Sunday for years.
