Salatiga City is located 49 kilometers south of Semarang City and 52 kilometers north of Surakarta City, and is on the state road that connects Semarang Regency with Surakarta City. The population of Salatiga city as of the end of 2021 is 193,525 people."[1] During the Hindu-Buddhist period, Salatiga was already a special region as stated in the Plumpungan or Hampra inscription. The inscription, dated 672 Saka or 750 AD, is written in Old Javanese characters and Sanskrit. According to Soekarto Kartoatmadja, the candrasengkala in the Plumpungan inscription points to Friday (Suk) rawâra 31 Asadha or July 24, 750 AD. The date is the inauguration of Hampra Village (Plumpungan) as a civilized area. Based on this inscription, Salatiga's anniversary was set on July 24, 750, which was standardized by the Regional Regulation of Salatiga City Level II Number 15 dated July 20, 1995 on the Anniversary of Salatiga City."[4] The Plumpungan inscription contains a legal decree about a civil land or swatantra for the village of Hampra in the Trigramyama region given by King Bhanu for the welfare of his people. The perdikan land is also known as sima. This land would usually be granted by kings to certain areas that had actually contributed to the kingdom or had voluntarily built religious shrines. The area then became an autonomous region that was exempt from taxes. The area of Hampra that was given the status of a perdikan area at the time of the inscription is the present-day Salatiga area. To immortalize the event, King Bhanu wrote in the Plumpungan inscription the phrase Srir Astu Swasti Prajabhyah which means "may all the people be happy and safe".
