Why avoidants pull away even when they like you
If you've ever been drawn to someone steady, warm, and genuinely present — and then felt the urge to pull away the moment you were truly seen — this is for you.
That magnetic pull toward safety and the flight from it are not two different things. They're the same move.
Here's the psychology: a securely attached partner doesn't chase, doesn't perform the push-pull you grew up expecting. That unfamiliar space feels like freedom — so you get closer than you ever have. But the moment the relationship deepens, their consistent presence becomes a mirror to every part of you you've spent a lifetime avoiding. So the deactivation system kicks in, and you run.
And the person who is safe, being safe, doesn't frantically chase. Which should reassure you. Instead it tells your fear: "see, they don't even care" — and you run harder.
This is why the same person who makes you feel the most at home is also the one who terrifies you.
In this video I break down the avoidant attachment style through the psychology of why we're magnetically drawn to secure partners, and the red flags to watch for — both in them, and in the version of you that runs.
