How long do dried herbs actually last? One year? Two years? Three years? And does an herb suddenly become “bad” just because it passed a certain date? Not exactly. In this video, we’re talking about the real shelf life of dried herbs and why leaves, flowers, roots, bark, seeds, and powdered herbs don’t necessarily age at the same rate. We’ll look at the difference between an herb that’s simply past its prime and one that may actually be spoiled. We’ll also talk about color, aroma, moisture, mold, oxidation, surface area, and the four big storage enemies: light, heat, air, and moisture. And we’re having a little public service announcement about something that drives me crazy… Keep your fingers out of your herbs. 😂 Actually, keep your fingers out of your lotions and salves too. Clean handling matters when you’re trying to protect the quality of the things you make and store. You don’t need to throw away every herb the moment it reaches an arbitrary date, but dried doesn’t mean immortal either. Learning to look at, smell, store, and handle your herbs properly will tell you much more than simply staring at the calendar. For educational purposes only.
