In this episode, Ken and Yuki go for a walk and practice a different listening strategy.
The goal is NOT:
“Never translate.”
Translation can still help.
The problem is getting stuck in translation while the live conversation continues.
Ken learns to stop mentally rewinding every sentence.
Instead, he practices making a “meaning snapshot.”
For example:
“I'm a little stiff today, so I don't want to walk too fast.”
Ken does not need a perfect Japanese translation.
He only needs the part that changes his response:
“Slower pace.”
That is enough to stay connected.
Throughout the walk, Ken and Yuki practice:
“Same here.”
“Not really.”
“That works.”
“A little fast, maybe.”
“Fine so far.”
“Sorry, the last part?”
“Did you say Friday or Saturday?”
“Why are we turning back?”
“What I mean is...”
“I lost my train of thought.”
“I'm getting tired.”
“Shorter sounds good.”
“One more time?”
“A little slower?”

The episode also explores one of the biggest fears older English learners have:
“If I need an extra second, do I sound slow?”
Ken realizes that a small delay is not failure.
The real problem is becoming farther and farther behind.
A calm one-second delay can be completely natural.
A long mental translation loop breaks the connection.
