Bayou 300 2x4 or 4x4 valve settings. Most people reset the valves at least once a year. Hours are not a good indicator by which to reset the valves, as when they set around for extended periods the valve seats and faces tend to corrode and then when used they clear the corrosion and the valves need adjustment. If your Bayou is suffering from these symptoms: hard to start, backfiring and coughing through air box fix or has set for an extended period of time you need to perform this maintenance. Valve adjustment really is a process that most can perform yourself at home. It doesn't require many tools, but make sure its done with the engine cold. Remove the plastic as shown in the video and make sure you have a 8mm socket and ratchet to remove the two valve covers. Its easier to find top dead center (as shown in the video) after removing the spark plug and then using the pull start to find "T" timing mark on the compression stroke. The only specialty tool needed is a feeler gauge and these can be purchased inexpensively at your local parts store. If your unsure you completed the process correctly is a good idea to slowly cycle the pull start after adjustment to check for clearances. After your satisfied with the valve adjustment try starting the engine, even with the gas tank off there should be enough fuel in the carburetor float to let it run a minute of so before putting everything back together.
