After topping FP3 that morning, Verstappen was a genuine pole threat, but Red Bull's internal combustion engine fault turned qualifying into a disaster. The ICE misfire confused the hybrid system, preventing the battery from charging to 100% during Q3, forcing an aborted lap and cold tyres for his final run. Verstappen estimated he was half a second down on straight-line speed alone, purely from the power shortfall. Even without Red Bull's reliability disaster, technical analysis shows Mercedes' underfloor aero advantage specific to Baku's 2.2km straight would have made the gap difficult for Red Bull to close.
