Cutting speed in a CNC machine refers to how fast the cutting tool engages the material, usually measured as surface speed (meters per minute or feet per minute). It’s a key parameter that affects tool life, surface finish, and machining time.

Factors Affecting Cutting Speed
Material of the workpiece
Tool material (HSS, carbide, ceramic)
Type of operation (turning, milling, drilling)
Coolant use
Desired surface finish
Machine rigidity
In CNC machining (especially turning on lathes), Constant Surface Speed (CSS) keeps the cutting speed (Vc) constant by automatically adjusting spindle RPM as the tool moves along the workpiece diameter.
What is CSS Mode?
Activated using G96
The machine varies RPM so that cutting speed remains constant
As diameter decreases → RPM increases
As diameter increases → RPM decreases
This ensures:
Uniform surface finish
Consistent tool wear
Better machining efficiency
CSS cancel means turning OFF constant surface speed control and switching back to fixed spindle speed.
The terms surface speed and cutting speed are often used in CNC machining, and this causes confusion—but in most practical cases, they mean almost the same thing, with a slight difference in context.
Cutting speed is the speed at which the cutting tool engages the workpiece material.
Measured in m/min (meters per minute) or ft/min
It represents how fast material is being removed at the cutting edge
Used in:
Turning
Milling
Drilling
“Surface speed” comes from describing motion of rotating parts
“Cutting speed” comes from machining theory
In real CNC work, they are used interchangeably
