In October 2025 we spent the day at Westfield Centro in Oberhausen, and honestly, nothing prepares you for how big this place is. It’s officially the largest shopping centre in Germany and it’s billed as the largest shopping and leisure centre in all of Europe. After walking it for hours, we believe it.
There are more than 220 shops spread over two floors, with everything from big fashion brands and sports shops to the only Apple Store in the whole Ruhr area. You walk in and the first thing you notice is all the palm trees and greenery inside. It feels more like a covered town than a mall.
Now let’s talk food, because this is where Centro really surprised us. Inside you’ve got the Coca-Cola Oase, which is said to be the biggest food court in Europe, and you can basically eat your way around the world in one spot. Then you step outside onto the Centro Promenade, a long waterfront strip with more than 20 restaurants, bars and cafes lined up next to each other, most of them with outdoor seating right by the water. We ended our day with dinner at Don Carlos on the waterfront, and eating outside with the water right next to us was one of the highlights of the whole trip. And if you’d rather skip the restaurants, there are plenty of benches along the water where you can just sit, relax and watch the world go by. A short walk away is the Oberhausen marina on the Rhine-Herne Canal, with boats tied up along the dock.
Families, this one’s for you too. Outside there’s a carousel for the kids to ride. There’s also a giant cinema with huge outdoor screens playing movie previews, so even walking past it feels like part of the show.
And if shopping isn’t your thing, there’s plenty more right next door. Sea Life Oberhausen, Germany’s largest freshwater and saltwater aquarium, is just around the corner, along with the Legoland Discovery Centre, a big water park and the famous Gasometer, a huge old gas tower that’s now one of the tallest exhibition halls in Europe. You could easily turn this into a full weekend trip.
A few quick tips if you’re planning a visit to Oberhausen, Germany: parking is free for most of the lots (there are thousands of spaces), and the mall is open Monday to Saturday from 10 in the morning until 8 at night. If you’re coming by train, it’s just a few minutes by bus or tram from Oberhausen Central Station.
