Two words in the new Caribbean charter legislation decide whether your boat is caught or exempt — here is how to read the rest of the fine print before you commit:

There is no Caribbean law with the word "ban" in it. There is a fee schedule and an entry cap that already work like one. In May 2025 the British Virgin Islands passed three amendment acts together, effective 1 June 2025, and the annual day-trip licence for a foreign-based commercial vessel went from $200 to $8,500 — a 4,000% increase — while the unrestricted multi-night charter licence reached $24,000 a year. Foreign-based term charter vessels are also capped at seven BVI entries per year.
⚓ At least 90 charter vessels have already relocated from the USVI to the BVI. The USVI charter yacht industry was worth $92 million in 2024; across St Thomas, St John and St Croix the marine trades put the figure at $166 million and around 5,000 jobs, with $14 million in direct spending already gone and projected losses approaching $100 million a year. The dispute reached Washington in November 2025 and the White House by January 2026.
🌴 The video also covers the part almost nobody knows: the two-tier system is not new. Since 1 August 2017 home-based charter boats have paid $6 per person per day and foreign-based boats $16. Today it is $2.00 per foot per day for foreign-registered vessels in peak season against $0.75 for BVI-registered ones.
🇧🇸 Plus the Bahamas: new maritime rules from 1 July 2025 with mandatory AIS for foreign vessels 50ft and over, seabed lease penalties up to $50,000 per acre, and a fee schedule effective 1 April 2026. And the precedent everyone forgets — 10% VAT plus a 4% port fee in 2022 cut Bahamas charter bookings by 40% within a year.
Then the honest answer to why 2027, a full worked cost of a normal BVI week, and where the fleet is actually going next.
