South Korea Population by Nationality & Origin | 1990–2026
Explore how South Korea’s population changed by nationality and origin from 1990 to 2026 through an animated bar chart race.
This visualization follows Koreans and major foreign-nationality communities living in South Korea, including Chinese, Vietnamese, Nepalese, Uzbeks, Cambodians, Indonesians, Myanmar nationals, Filipinos, Thais, Mongolians, Sri Lankans, Americans, Japanese, Russians, Bangladeshis, Kazakhs, Taiwanese, Indians, Pakistanis, Kyrgyz and other groups.
South Korea has experienced a major demographic transformation since the 1990s. Economic growth, labor migration, international marriages, education, business migration and long-term immigration have gradually increased the number and diversity of foreign residents in the country.
The rapid growth of Vietnamese, Nepalese, Uzbek, Cambodian, Indonesian and other Asian communities has been especially notable in recent decades, while Chinese nationals remain one of the largest foreign-origin populations in South Korea.
The Korean population series represents the resident-registration population, while foreign-nationality figures are based primarily on registered foreign residents staying in South Korea for more than 90 days.
Historical nationality data are not available as a complete official monthly series for the entire 1990–2026 period. Therefore, the visualization combines official annual statistics with reconstructed historical estimates and monthly interpolation. Earlier years, smaller nationality groups and parts of 2026 should be interpreted as modeled estimates rather than exact monthly census counts.
This video is intended for demographic visualization and historical comparison. Nationality, ethnicity, citizenship and cultural identity are different concepts and should not be interpreted as interchangeable.

Methodology:
Official annual benchmark data were used wherever available. Missing historical nationality values were reconstructed using demographic trends and constrained to official totals. Monthly values between annual benchmarks were interpolated to create a continuous series suitable for bar chart race visualization. 2026 values may include estimates for months where final official data were not yet available.
