THE WOLF HUNTERZ Reactions THE WOLF HUNTERZ React To THE WOLF HUNTERZ REACTION TO Ralph Stanley - O Death Ralph Stanley O Death Death, the Devil, and Halloween Triple Series (Part 1, 1 of 8) Modern Halloween has its roots in a number of old traditions; the pagan festival of Samhain, the All Hallows’ Eve practices of children going door to door asking for soul cakes in exchange for praying for the souls of the visitees’ family members, and of course the Danse Macabre or Dance of Death, the superstition arriving out of the Black Death in Europe where every Halloween night Death calls the dead to dance from midnight to dawn. So here’s the first series of three for my favorite time of year. —— Bluegrass legend Dr. Ralph Stanley had been playing music for 70 years when he died in 2016, and his several versions and recordings of this traditional Appalachian folk ballad seems perfect to kick this series off. He started performing with his brother Carter as the Stanley Brothers with a backing band called the Clinch Mountain Boys (which over the years were led by him, his son, and his grandson), then after his brother died in ‘67 he continued on as Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys. I believe the first version here is from them in the early 70s. He had a more mainstream career resurgence with the release of the 2000 film “O Brother Where Art Thou,” and the second version is derived from that recording (though performed live about 10 years after the film came out).
