What ACTUALLY Happened During the Hunt for Gollum?

What actually happened during the Hunt for Gollum—and did Aragorn and Gandalf truly succeed? This Tolkien lore deep dive follows Gollum from Dale and Mordor to the Dead Marshes, Mirkwood, and the road to Mount Doom. The Hunt for Gollum was not one continuous chase. It was an intermittent intelligence war lasting years, and Sauron reached its most important witness first. We reconstruct the published timeline, explain Aragorn's brutal unseen journey, separate The Lord of the Rings from the conflicting details in *Unfinished Tales*, and ask why the failure to keep Gollum imprisoned ultimately mattered. Sources discussed include The Fellowship of the Ring chapters “The Shadow of the Past” and “The Council of Elrond,” Appendix B, *The Two Towers*, *The Return of the King*, and the variant account in *Unfinished Tales*.
